VLC media player - cross-platform media player and media server
Nov 24th, 2008 by Nim
VLC is a great award winning software to use when you have a video or audio file in a format that Windows Media Player and others do not easily play. I have occasionally experienced problems playing .AVI files and DVD’s in WMP, but VLC takes care of these issues as it plays everything from .AVI to DVD and even VCD’s. VLC Media Player even has the ability to stream multimedia files across your local network. I have never needed to use this part of the functionality, but it was one of the primary reasons for developing the software. From their website:
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. It doesn’t need any external codec or program to work.
