Malwarebytes is a relatively new spyware scanner that is very effective in cleaning your PC from the newer more resilient spyware these days. I particularly like Malwarebytes because it is one of the only spyware scanners to detect and remove the notorious Antivirus 2007 infection , something Ad-Aware and Spybots cannot do. The software will also scan for the Windows Security Center infection that’s been going around this summer. I use the free version of Malwarebytes as a replacement of some of the more traditional scanners as the updates tend to be way more current than anything else for free out there.

A little while back I posted a file converter call MediaCoder. Well I got a comment from a guy named James (thanks, btw) who suggested Youconvertit instead. Youconvertit is a classic example of Web 2.0 software. No installer or codecs needed, just simply upload the media file you want to convert on the Youconvertit web-page then select which format you would like to convert the file to. All of this is done on one web-page and it uses AJAX so the whole process feels very seamless. Youconvertit is still in beta format, but so far it looks like a great utility. One other feature I like about the Youconvertit website is it will even convert media files that are hosted on other websites, like youtube.com. Very cool indeed, all you do is paste the URL to the media file and select the output format. Again, all done from one web-page with AJAX on the front end.

Well, it looks like the browser wars are on again, ala 1994. Except this time the company with the better browser has enough cash and influence to fend off any corporate bully that comes its way. Google, god love’em, is going right after Microsoft with it’s rumored release of Chrome tomorrow. It’s my personal opinion that Microsoft deserves to lose a little market share to Google. Where does my disenchantment with Microsoft come from you ask? One word… Vista. Microsoft in 2008 is clearly a different company from the cutting edge entity that brought us Windows 2000, Office 2000 and Windows XP. Anyways, back to Chrome, it’s made by Google so you know it will be quality software and although it’s not officially released yet, according to Techcrunch Chrome will be optimized for sites developed with AJAX and available for download Sept. 2nd at the URL below.

Speedtest.net is a flash based bandwith tester that seems to be very accurate. I like how it can detect ISP upload compression and how you can visually select multiple locations to test your bandwidth from. I have found the tool very accurate and the Flash animations make it fun to use.

Process Lasso is your introduction to BitSum Technologies. They make a whole bunch of really useful software and utilities. From their website:
Process Lasso is a unique new technology intended to automatically adjust the allocation of CPU cycles so that system responsiveness is improved in high-load situations. It does this by dynamically temporarily lowering the priorities of processes that are consuming too many CPU cycles, there-by giving other processes a chance to run if they are in need. This is useful for both single and multi-core processors. No longer will a single process be able to bring your system to a virtual stall.
