Logmein has been around for some time now and has grown into a very reliable and usable product. Logmein’s primary function of remote access to a single PC located at home or at work is absolutely free. Logmein also offers a myriad of pay options for IT administrators as well as corporate users for enterprise level remote access. Once you download and install the client software to your PC and setup a user account you are all set to go. Remote access to your PC is possible from any Internet connected computer in the world. Simply visit the Logmein website and log yourself in! A big advantage of it being web-based is that you don’t have to worry about firewalls or any port forwarding, access is available from just about any Internet connection which makes it great for use while traveling. Logmein also uses 256-bit encryption for your connection to your PC so you can connect securely from any network. The video below is from PCMech and provides more detail and a nice tutorial on this excellent product.

VLC is a great award winning software to use when you have a video or audio file in a format that Windows Media Player and others do not easily play. I have occasionally experienced problems playing .AVI files and DVD’s in WMP, but VLC takes care of these issues as it plays everything from .AVI to DVD and even VCD’s. VLC Media Player even has the ability to stream multimedia files across your local network. I have never needed to use this part of the functionality, but it was one of the primary reasons for developing the software. From their website:

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. It doesn’t need any external codec or program to work.

Have you ever tried to delete a file or folder in Windows only to be greeted with the error message below?

windows unlocker

This message is no doubt annoying, and up until now the most reliable solution was to simply reboot your computer. A nice utility called Unlocker helps to free up locked files and folders so you may delete them or move them with ease. Unlocker is very easy to use as it adds itself to the context menu available via right-clicking your mouse. I have used this convenient tool numerous times in deleting various files locked by whatever program or process it is being accessed by and have grown to appreciate it at the least expected times.

It’s been a hectic month, so without further delay here is the latest post. Random.Org is a fun and useful website when you need a random number, a quick virtual coin toss, or a list to be scrambled. I use it for the latter, where I frequently have lists that need to have the order randomized. It also comes in handy when you need to generate passwords. The website is very detailed and apparently generates the randomness via atmospheric noise. Very interesting for you probability and statistics enthusiasts…

Palbee is a free online service  to web conference with friends and colleagues all over the world. Many online web conferencing services cost upwards of $50 a month but Palbee is 100% free for up to 5 users at any one time. I find it very useful for basic conferencing needs and being hosted online there are no downloads or configuration issues to deal with. You simply tell your contacts to visit the site and sign up for an account, then have them join the meeting. Palbee will automatically identify your webcam and microphone via Adobe Flash Player then enable them for use on the site. One other nice feature of Palbee is it supports the ability to record meetings and presentations then save save them on the website for later viewing or distribution. Technically the site is still in beta form but the service seems to work just fine as it is.
